About Ashton Bilger
Ashton Bilger is an accomplished percussionist, pianist, and classical music educator with nearly two decades of international performance and pedagogical experience. As the Founder and President of the Bilger Academy of Orchestral Arts and Conductor of the Bilger Philharmonic Orchestra in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Ashton brings a world-class standard of classical training, ensemble discipline, and conservatory rigor to Southeast Asia. His career is defined by a relentless pursuit of artistic distinction, a journey rooted in the foundational belief that music education must be both uncompromisingly rigorous and genuinely enjoyable and loving to every dedicated learner.
At the heart of Ashton’s work in Phnom Penh is a simple mission: classical music must be taught the right way from the very first lesson. Through structured instrumental fundamentals, musical literacy, and symphonic performance, he is building a community of music that empowers young Cambodian artists and community musicians to achieve their highest expressive and technical potential.
Ashton’s musical trajectory spans more than 18 years of intensive performance across both piano and orchestral percussion. Recognizing early on that true artistry requires a balance between fundamental precision and true pedagogical understanding. He pursued formal academic training, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education with a primary specialization in percussion. This academic foundation provided him with deep expertise in sequential curriculum design, instrumental pedagogy, developmental musicianship, and ensemble conducting.
Throughout his career in the United States and internationally, Ashton has distinguished himself across competitive solo arenas and premier performance stages. He has won multiple All-State and All-Region percussion competitions in the State of Texas, earning acclaim for his rhythmic precision, nuanced touch, and dynamic expression.
His performance career includes marching with the world class Carolina Crown Drum & Bugle Corps, one of the most elite and physically demanding brass and percussion organizations in the world, where he refined an uncompromising standard of ensemble uniformity, focus, and performance stamina. Furthermore, his orchestral experience includes performing with the prestigious Houston Symphony Orchestra, performing alongside master musicians and conductors while absorbing the subtleties of orchestral balance, coloration, and nuance on the grandest symphonic stages.
For centuries, classical music education has too often been burdened by outdated, authoritarian methods, environments driven by intimidation, harsh pressure, fear of mistakes, and emotional burnout. Ashton rejects this archaic approach entirely. His core philosophy is simple: teaching classical music the right way means replacing fear and pressure with love, curiosity and connection.
Ashton believes that fear restricts a musician's physical freedom and suffocates their artistic voice. When students practice solely to avoid reprimand, their connection to the instrument becomes tense and fragile. True artistry is born when a student falls in love with the sound of their instrument.
At the Bilger Academy of the Orchestral Arts, the learning environment is built on encouragement, patience, and mutual respect. Mistakes are treated not as failures, but as essential stepping stones toward understanding. By mentoring students with warmth, humor, and empathy, Ashton helps learners open their hearts to music the very same way he did as a young musician. Fun and rigorous learning are never mutually exclusive; when students are engaged, smiling, and genuinely inspired, their natural dedication, focus, and musical growth flourish effortlessly.
Driven by a desire to bring formal orchestral training to Cambodia, Ashton established the Bilger Academy of Orchestral Arts in Phnom Penh. Recognizing a vibrant appetite for classical arts alongside a need for systematic orchestral education, he designed a comprehensive academy structured around five core instrument groups: piano, strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion.
"Whether your aspiration in music is to pursue a professional musical path, master your primary instrument, or share the fun of performing in a full symphony orchestra, the Bilger Academy of Orchestral Arts was founded to guide your growth with integrity and care. We invite you to join our community, embrace the mindset of excellence, and experience classical music taught the right way."
